Humongous Hawk
I'm an idiot. I had the video camera in my hand, and I saw a hawk at the food I set out at the camera trap. So I set the video camera down on the table, run back to my office to get the video camera, then realize I already was holding it in the other room, so I run back to get the video camera. I turn it on, realize the tv is on, so I go to mute it, go back to video the hawk, at which point the hawk flies off. Sigh. Probably all I got on video was a bunch of frantic running around and me swearing as the hawk flew off. Oh well. Let's hope he got his photo taken by the camera trap, except the batteries probably were not fully charged but I just put it out a couple hours ago so I hope I got something. If so, that will be my first bird shot besides crows.

Not One, Not Two, Not Three, but FOUR Raccoons!
This morning as I was sitting eating my breakfast, up walks a group of four raccoons! They looked all furry and like they were youngsters. They went down to the pond and were walking on the ice, which couldn't have been very thick since half of the pond was ice free. Then they got on top of the wood pile and then walked single file down a fallen tree into the woods (except for one straggler who took a different route). I wonder if they are living under our deck. I managed to get them on video. Once I figure out how to edit videos, I will try to post it. Shortly after that, two does walked by. New Fox Sighting!
This morning at around 8:30 a.m. I spotted a fox with a completely bald tail. I ran to get our new video camera, but couldn't figure out how to open the lens cap in time. He ran to the top of a pile of wood, as if he was checking the traffic so he could cross the street. His rump also looked a tad mangey. I should have thrown out the leftover chicken for him, because it has gotten cold again and there was ice on the pond.

Signs of Spring in January?!
This morning there was a flock of robins bathing and drinking from the water dishes and the pond. There must have been at least a dozen. Even a chipmunk or two (couldn't tell if it was the same one or not) was out and about. It makes me nervous though when animals start using the pond before I've taken the net off, because I'm afraid they'll get stuck in the net like the time the frogs were all stuck and lost some toes. It seems like I have to take the net off earlier and earlier each year. It's been in the upper 60's the past couple days when January is usually our coldest month.
